A New Look at Radio Supernova Remnants

Abstract: Catalogues are presented of radio supernova remnants in both Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds together with maps of the LMC remnants prepared at a frequency of 843 MHz and with a resolution of 43 x 45 arcsec. The 38 confirmed remnants are believed to represent a reasonably complete sample for diameters less than about 40 pc although the LMC catalogue is probably very incomplete for larger diameters. The supernova remnants (SNRs) are compared with the Galactic remnants in the catalogue of Clark and… Show more

“…Mathewson et al (1983) provided a catalogue of 25 SNRs with radio, optical, and X-ray results. With more observations, Mills et al (1984) and Mathewson et al (1984Mathewson et al ( , 1985 increased the size of the sample to 32. In the 1990s, several new SNRs were discovered with ROSAT pointed observations (Chu et al 1993(Chu et al , 2000Smith et al 1994), sometimes aided by optical spectroscopy (Chu et al 1995(Chu et al , 1997.…”

“…For the 36 cm Molonglo Synthesis Telescope (MOST) flux density measurement given in Table 2 we used unpublished images as described by Mills et al (1984), and for the 20 cm we used image from Hughes et al (2007). The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) project C634 (at 6/3 cm) observations were combined with mosaic observations from project C918 (Dickel et al 2005).…”

“…For the final image (Stokes parameter I) we excluded baselines created with the 6th ATCA antenna, leaving Notes. The flux density was estimated using images from Mills et al (1984) at λ = 36 cm and from Hughes et al (2007) at λ = 20 cm.…”

“…The 36 cm (843 MHz) measurements come from the Molonglo Synthesis Telescope (MOST; as described in Mills et al 1984) and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMMS; Mauch et al 2008) mosaic images. These 36 cm surveys are from two different sets of observations and we point that the MOST data comes with somewhat better uv coverage and sensitivity.…”

“…Mathewson et al (1983) find an optical size of 162 ′′ ×129 ′′ and an X-ray size of ∼120 ′′ , an integrated flux density at 408 MHz of 130 mJy and a radio spectral index of α = −0.53. Mills et al (1984) recorded an integrated flux density measurement at 843 MHz of 850 mJy, updating the spectral index to α = −0.52. They also note a horseshoe morphology for which they state that approximately one third of SNRs greater than 30 ′′ are.…”
