A new look at neurobehavioral development in rhesus monkey neonates (Macaca mulatta)

Abstract: The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) evaluates a newborn infant's autonomic, motor, state, temperament, and social-attentional systems, which can help to identify infants at risk of developmental problems. Given the prevalence of rhesus monkeys being used as an animal model for human development, here we aimed to validate a standardized test battery modeled after the NBAS for use with nonhuman primates called the Infant Behavioral Assessment Scale (IBAS), employing exploratory structural e… Show more

“…Combined with Paukner A et al [15] described the growth and development of monkeys as being faster between the ages of 1 and 3 years, Anne H. van der Spek et al [16] stated that thyroid hormones are essential for the growth and development of the human organism, and similarly, the relatively high levels of thyroid hormones in monkeys during this period can be interpreted as being required for their growth and development. From the age of 4 years, female monkeys begin to have regular menstrual cycles.…”

“…Macaque and human infants share certain limitations and abilities, particularly during the first weeks of life. Based on these similarities, the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, originally developed for humans, was adapted for use with infant macaque monkeys (Paukner, Capitanio, & Blozis, 2020; Schneider & Suomi, 1992). Survival reflexes such as sucking, rooting, grasping, clasping, and righting can be measured as early as postnatal day one.…”
