Abstract.To show the effect of intravaginal progesterone-releasing device (CIDR) on turnover of DF and follicular growth after CIDR insertion on day 16 of estrous cycle and to compare the follicular growth during CIDR treatment between heifers with two or three follicular waves, four heifers were given CIDR for 7 days at late luteal phase on day 16 of estrous cycle. The presence of CIDR in the vagina containing progesterone prevented for the animals to return to estrus at the normal time and significantly increased cycle length, as compared to the preceding cycle (26.3 ±0.5 vs 20.8 ±1.5 days, p<0.05). Ovarian follicular dynamics were characterized by waves of follicular development occurring at different times during the estrous cycle. In the stage 1, four heifers had two (n=2) or three (n=2) follicular waves per estrous cycle. However, during the cycle of CIDR treatment, all heifers had three follicular waves per cycle. The CIDR treatment caused an extension of dominant phase of the ovulatory DF selected in the third follicular wave in heifers with 3 follicular waves per cycle before CIDR treatment. In heifers with two follicular waves per cycle before CIDR treatment, after CIDR treatment the DF underwent atresia without delay and followed emergence of the new follicular wave, in which no extension of dominant phase of the DF or ovulatory follicle was shown. The CIDR treatment did not affect the follicular growth during the subsequent cycle. In conclusion, when CIDR treatment commenced at late luteal phase, CIDR may cause an extension of an interval from emergence to ovulation of ovulatory DF in heifer with three follicular waves. And also, the CIDR treatment does not delay atresia process of DF in preceding cycle and is developed the new follicular waves in heifers with two follicular waves per cycle before CIDR treatment.

Özet: Sunulan çalışmada, inaktif ve aktif ovaryumlu düvelerde PRID ve GnRH uygulamalarının bazı fertilite parametrelerine etkisinin araştırılması amaçlandı. Çalışmada, inaktif ovaryumlu (Grup I, n:12) ve aktif ovaryumlu (Grup II, n:12) toplam 24 adet düve materyal olarak kullanıldı. Grup I ve II'deki düvelere özel aplikatör yardımı ile 12 gün süreyle PRID (1.55 g progesteron ve 10 mg östradiol benzoat) intravaginal yolla uygulandı. PRID'in çıkarıldığı gün GnRH (0.0042 mg buserelin asetat 2.5 ml i.m.) enjeksiyonu yapıldı. Uygulama bitimi östrus görülme zamanı Grup I'de 3.22±0.97 ve Grup II'de 2.91±1.04 gün olarak tespit edildi. Her iki grup arasındaki fark istatistiksel olarak önemsiz bulundu (p>0.05). PRID uzaklaştırıldıktan sonra Grup I'de % 75 ve Grup II'de % 91.67 oranında östrus saptandı. İlk tohumlama ve tüm tohumlamalar (üç tohumlama) sonrası gebelik oranları sırasıyla, Grup I'de % 33.33 ve %55.56 oranında Grup II'de % 45.45 ve %72.73 oranında bulundu. Uygulama bitimi gebe kalma aralığı Grup I'de 15.2±18.57 gün, Grup II'de 13.0±15.7 gün olarak belirlendi (p>0.05). Sonuç olarak, inaktif ve aktif ovaryumlu düvelerde PRID+GnRH uygulamalarının siklusun düzenlenmesinde veya başlatılmasında, östrus görülmesinde ve fertilite üzerinde etkili olduğu kanısına varıldı.Anahtar sözcükler: Aktif ovaryum, düve, fertilite parametreleri, GnRH, inaktif ovaryum, PRID. Effect of PRID and GnRH combination on fertility parameters of heifers having inactive and active ovariesSummary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PRID and GnRH combination on fertility parameters of heifers having inactive and active ovaries. Twenty-four heifers (Group I, inactive ovaries n:12 and Group II, active ovaries n:12) was to used as material of the study. All heifers were inserted PRID (1.55 g progesterone and 10 mg estradiol benzoate) intravaginally for 12 days. At the time of PRID removal, GnRH (0.0042 mg buserelin acetate 2.5 ml i.m.) administered. It was found that between the end of the treatment and time of behavioral estrus were 3.22±0.97 and 2.91±1.04 days in Group I and II, respectively. The differences between groups were statistically similar (p>0.05). Following removal PRID, the percentage of estrus detection were 75 % and 91.67 % for Group I and II, respectively. Pregnancy rates of the first service and the overall pregnancy rates were 33.33 % and 55.56 % for Group I and 45.45 % and 72.73 % for Group II. Intervals between the end of administration and conception were 15.2±18.57 and 13.0±15.7 days for Group I and II, respectively (p>0.05). As a result, it has been suggested that PRID and GnRH treatments in heifers with inactive and active ovaries were effective on reproductive performance, observation of estrus and regulation of estrus cycle.

Dairy producers can use various reproductive management programs to breed heifers. Synchronization of estrus or ovulation protocols not only should optimize pregnancy rates, but they must be practical to implement or the protocol will fail due to lack of compliance. Lifetime profi t of dairy replacement heifers is maximized when heifers calve between 23 and 25 months of age. Therefore, in order to maintain genetic progress and maximize profi tability, heifer breeding programs should include artifi cial insemination and calving to occur around 24 months. This chapter discusses reproductive management strategies that can be implemented to obtain an optimal calving age in dairy heifers.
