A New Insight into Flowering Regulation: Molecular Basis of Flowering Initiation in Magnolia × soulangeana ‘Changchun’

Abstract: Magnolia × soulangeana 'Changchun' are trees that bloom in spring and summer respectively after flower bud differentiation. Here, we use phenological and morphological observation and RNA-seq technology to study the molecular basis of flowering initiation in 'Changchun'. During the process of flowering initiation in spring and summer, the growth of expanded flower buds increased significantly, and their shape was obviously enlarged, which indicated that flowering was initiated. A total of 168,120 expressed gen… Show more

“…Under long daylight, salicylic acid (SA) can induce flowering in Wolffia microscopic of short daylight plant [72], salicylic acid treatment can promote more flowering in citrus [73], and salicylic acid (SA) accumulation can inhibit the development of stamen abscission in tung tree [74]. Flower bud differentiation and flowering are two distinct stages in most woody plants [75,76], and it can also be hypothesized that VcSPL53 is involved in floral initiation and flowering in blueberry. In summary, the blueberry VcSPL gene family has a significant role in blueberry plant growth, leaf development, flowering regulation, and abiotic stress, especially in the process of floral initiation and induction.…”

“…Hormone Signaling: PGR Treatments Modulate GA and ABA Signaling Cassava homologs of the Arabidopsis transcripts Gibberellin-Insensitive Dwarf1b (GID1b) and Gibberellin 2-oxidase2 (GA2ox2) were downregulated by PGR treatments (Figures 9, 10). In some species, such as tea (Camellia sinensis) and Magnolia x soulangeana, GID genes are expressed at elevated levels when floral induction takes place (Jiang et al, 2020;Liu et al, 2020). GA2 oxidases, on the other hand, inactivate bioactive gibberellins (Thomas et al, 1999).…”

“…Gibberellin (GA) is an integral phytohormone, which plays diverse roles in plant growth and development, including seed germination, stem elongation, and owering time [73]. GA homeostasis is achieved by tight regulation of both activating enzymes, including GA20ox and GA3ox that catalyze GA biosynthesis, and deactivating enzymes, (GA2ox), that contribute to GA turnover [74]. Interestingly, the GA biosynthesis genes, GA2ox, showed signi cantly reduced expression at 900m in M. micrantha.…”
