A New Index of Energy Dissipation Considering Time Factor under the Impact Loads

Abstract: Rock failure phenomena are accompanied by abundant energy variation, and the energy dissipation can explain the dynamic mechanical characteristics of the rock. In this study, a series of granite specimens (a total of 60) with different aspect ratios were dynamically loaded by a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) to explain the energy dissipation and the rock-crushing degree under dynamic load. A new index, namely energy time density (wtd), is proposed to evaluate the energy dissipation considering the time fa… Show more

“…The process of rock deformation and failure is accompanied by energy conversion, and energy dissipation reflects the development characteristics of internal damage of the rock sample. When PFC2D is used for numerical simulation, the changes of various energies during the test can be tracked in real time [24], which can facilitate the understanding of the simulation results. It is assumed that there is no heat exchange between the rock mass and the outside world in the process of rock deformation and failure.…”

“…Wang proposed a new index of energy dissipation of dynamic loading. 35 In the SHPB, the incident energy affects the dynamic characteristics of the specimen, and the energy magnitude has received widespread attention in previous studies. However, the action time of the energy also affects the dynamic characteristics of the specimen.…”

“…In the above description, the damage is caused by energy dissipation. 35 To study the mesodamage of red sandstone specimens, the nonimpacted rocks were investigated with NMR, and the detection was carried out again after every impact. Figure 10 shows the general trend of the resulting curves.…”
