Abstract

The axial dipole moment can be estimated from the magnetic field configuration and the virtual dipole moment by using an empirical formula.qThe estimated axial dipole moment is underestimated by approximately three times the virtual dipole moment during the Laschamp excursion, consistent with the results of paleomagnetic models.
