The material handling equipment (MHE) has a close connection with layout of machinery and plays the important role in productivity of servicing or manufacturing systems. Since each of MHE has distinct characteristics than the others with respect to conflicting criteria and design experts may state the different subjective judgments with respect to qualitative criteria, the material handling equipment selection problem (MHESP) can be taken into account as a group multi-criteria decisionmaking (GMCDM) problem. In this paper, a version of type-2 fuzzy sets (T2FSs), named Gaussian interval type-2 fuzzy sets (GIT2FSs), is first used as an alternative to the traditional triangular membership functions (MFs) to weight criteria and sub-criteria and also evaluate of alternatives with respect to sub-criteria. The synthetic value method of GIT2FSs is then carried out to convert the assessments stated as GIT2FSs for each alternative with respect to each sub-criterion and also weights of criteria (sub-criteria) into the single fuzzy rating and weight, respectively. Then, the fuzzy weighted average (FWA) approach is adopted to integrate the single fuzzy ratings of each alternative with respect to sub-criteria and the single fuzzy weights of sub-criteria under each criterion with the aggregated weighted ratings. In next stage, ELECTRE III (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la Realite´-elimination and choice translation reality) is generalized with GIT2FSs to select the optimal MHE through a new ranking approach. Moreover, some arithmetic operations and properties are extended to GIT2FSs. In addition, to demonstrate its potential applications, the proposed methodology is implemented in a real case study and an illustrative example, and then, the ranking results are compared with those of the others in the literature. Finally, the sensitivity analysis is carried out to show robustness and stability of the obtained results. KeywordsAbstract Increasing efficiency does not necessarily require the use of expensive technologies. Sometimes implementing properly management and engineering principles, employing skilled and efficient manpower, planning appropriately, and identifying effective priorities can increase efficiency and reduce costs. Conveyor belt equipment pieces are category components which carry heavy materials in factories and mines. Downtime of the pieces have many costs for the factory. Identification of parts of conveyor belts, taking preventative and repair measures and prioritizing measures in order to increase efficiency and reduce cost for downtime conveyor belt are important. In this study, using fuzzy TOPSIS technique to prioritize the preventative and repair measures of conveyor belt equipment pieces factory in the pelletizing plant of GolGohar mining and industrial company have been discussed. In this regard, the main and ten other parts of conveyor belt along with their practical roles are identified from viewpoint of engineers and technicians who deal with them. Besides, intended preventative and repair measures are identified according to previous records. Then maintenance repair parts and expert opinions are discussed to prioritize the preventative measures. Finally, recommendations are provided for increasing efficiency of conveyor belt and reducing cost and repair time.

Material handling is one of the activities in manufacturing that can drastically affect not only the production cost but also the performance of the entire line, particularly in continuous and transfer manufacturing system. Therefore, selecting the most appropriate material handling equipment is a critical decision that should be could be carefully studied in the early stages of manufacturing system design. This paper is mainly concerned with selecting the most appropriate conveyor for handling ceramic tiles during it production phases. The handling process in this application is characterized by dealing with fragile product as well as exposure to high temperature. Generally, such a decision inherently entails several conflicting qualitative and quantitative criteria. Accordingly, a multi-criteria decision making model has been developed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to assist the system designer in selecting the most appropriate conveyor. In this study, four conveyor alternatives have been considered. The results of the model implementation recommended slat conveyors as the best alternative for serving in the ceramic tile manufacturing environment, followed by belt and chain conveyors, while the last one in the ranking is the roller conveyor. Besides, the developed model can be used to perform sensitivity analysis to explore how the decision could be affected in response to changes in the decision maker's preferences related to the considered criteria.
