A new global interior ocean mapped climatology: the 1° ×  1° GLODAP version 2

Abstract: Abstract. We present a mapped climatology (GLODAPv2.2016b) of ocean biogeochemical variables based on the new GLODAP version 2 data product (Olsen et al., 2016; Key et al., 2015), which covers all ocean basins over the years 1972 to 2013. The quality-controlled and internally consistent GLODAPv2 was used to create global 1°  ×  1° mapped climatologies of salinity, temperature, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, total dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2), total alkalinity (TAlk), pH, and CaCO3 saturation states… Show more

“…With higher atmospheric CO 2 Figure 1. Year 2002 surface aragonite saturation state (a) from the GLODAPv2 observational dataset Olsen et al, 2016;Lauvset et al, 2016) and (b) simulated. The purple line denotes an aragonite saturation state of 3. concentrations, more CO 2 is taken up by the ocean; this in turn reduces the oceans buffering capacity of CO 2 , or Revelle factor (Revelle and Suess, 1957), acting as a feedback to reduce ocean carbon uptake.…”

“…Elsewhere, these values were set to zero. The initial concentrations of nitrate, dissolved inorganic carbon, and total alkalinity were taken from 5 the annual-mean fields of the GLobal Ocean Data Analysis Project version 2 (GLODAP2; Lauvset et al, 2016). The initial concentrations of dissolved oxygen were set to the annual-mean fields from the World Ocean Atlas 2013 Version 2 (WOA13; Garcia et al, 2014).…”

“…The simulated basin-wide storage (inventory) of simulated C ant , adjusted for the late starting date, was compared to the 30 TTD-based estimates of anthropogenic carbon from (1) the GLODAPv2 assessment (Lauvset et al, 2016) These model-data differences in basin-wide inventories were investigated further by comparing vertical profiles of C ant from the models to those from the GLODAPv2 data-based estimates (Fig. 7).…”

“…These two cruises were chosen among other cruises because of their geographically similar placement and because they cross large parts of the Arctic, including almost all four major basins. (Lauvset et al, 2016), both based on the TTD approach. …”
