“…Pieces of these structures were first seen by van Kuilenburg (1972) and . Although there was no direct connection, Mathewson et al (1974) suggested a possible association of these features to the MCs and this hypothesis was further explored by Mathewson et al (1979), Morras (1982), and Bajaja et al (1989). With reprocessed HIPASS data Putman et al (1998) demonstrated that the LAF gas is indeed associated with the Magellanic Clouds and is an extension of the Magellanic Stream.…”

“…Uncovering the Magellanic Stream and its surroundings is crucial to the understanding of the formation and evolution of not only the Milky Way, but the entire Local Group, yet until the present paper, the neutral hydrogen data for the entire Stream and its surroundings remained severely undersampled (e.g., Mathewson et al 1974;Bajaja et al 1985). Sections of the Stream have been observed at higher spatial or velocity resolution (e.g., Cohen 1982;Haynes 1979;Morras 1983Morras , 1985Wayte 1989), but these observations focused on small regions within the main filament of the Stream originally presented by Mathewson et al Here we present H i maps of the entire Magellanic Stream and its surroundings at 15<5 resolution (equivalent to 250 pc at 55 kpc) using data from the H i Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS; 5 Barnes et al 2001).…”

“…• by 1 • grid; the southern material of Bajaja et al (1985) was observed on the IAR 100-foot telescope at somewhat lower rms sensitivity then the Hulsbosch & Wakker survey and at comparable velocity resolution, but on a coarser initial sampling grid of 2…”
