“…For example, in the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, A & H is defined in terms of "scholarship," "the study of" and "branches of creative activity" (Art, n.d.; Humanity, n.d.). Similarly, Bod et al (2016) uses "practices" and "objects of study" as terms in his description of the humanities. Finally, professional organizations describe A & H as "study and application" (United States Congress, 2014, p. 2) and as "modes of expression" (American Council of Learned Societies, 1964, p. 1).…”

“…One of the ways an A & H field is frequently conceptualized is through a set of academic disciplines. Although the attempt to specify precisely which disciplines belong to A & H has gone through many iterations throughout Western history (Bod, Kursell, Maat, & Weststeijn, 2016), its conceptualization as a distinct group of disciplines appears from the time of Cicero and continues into the 15th-century Italian Renaissance (Proctor, 1998), and through later institutionalization by Western universities (Armitage et al, 2013; Harvard Task Force on the Arts, 2008; Kernan, 2014; Mathae, Langrehr, & Birzer, 2004). Thus, the academic disciplines of A & H may include traditional disciplines such as classical languages and literature, history, and philosophy (Levi, 1983; Proctor, 1998) and also more contemporary disciplines such as modern languages, linguistics, jurisprudence, archeology, comparative religion, ethics, and criticism and theory of arts (United States Congress, 2014).…”

“…16 Journals like this one also hope to be 'a forum for interdisciplinary encounters'; 17 and the recently created History of Humanities claims to move into a new field of study, on the basis of both the global approach and the cross-fertilization between disciplines. 18 Current debates on interdisciplinarity as a form of knowledge organization often involve distinctions (between multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary research) and different methodological approaches (instrumental or epistemological), depending on the focus and orientation of the research (empirical or theoretical). 19 Implicit in these debates is the assumption that varying degrees of collaboration go hand in hand with the success of the research, celebrating integration and convergence between disciplines over collaborative work in parallel or in sequence, regardless of the nature and objectives of the research.…”

“…For this reason, one of the stated goals of this journal is to advocate the study of the history of the humanities from a global perspective. 1 In the first issue we included one aspect of the humanities in China. The current issue includes essays on the humanities in precolonial Mali, pre-Hispanic America, the Ottoman Empire, and the Soviet Union.…”
