A new family of parasitic copepods, the Lernaeosoleidae (Poecilostomatoida), from demersal fishes in the Northwest Atlantic, with a description of Bobkabata kabatabobbus n.gen., n.sp. and a redescription of Lernaeosolea lycodis Wilson, 1944

Abstract: Bobkabata kabatabobbus n.gen., n. sp., collected from the flesh of Cottunculus thomsoni (Günther, 1882) from the Northwest Atlantic, is described. A species of similiar general habitus, Lernaeosolea lycodis Wilson, 1944, is redescribed from the holotype specimen. Bobkabata kabatabobbus n.gen., n.sp. and L. lycodis are placed in a new family, Lernaeosoleidae, based on the structure of the trunk and second antenna. The Lernaeosoleidae n.fam. appears most closely related to the poecilostomatoid family Chondracant… Show more

“…George often referred to an especially prolifi c scientist as a "force of nature" or one having a lot of "horsepower." He also loved naming parasites after his admired colleagues: for Kai, Jusheyus shogunus Bob, Albionella kabatai Benz et Izawa, 1990 and the now famous binomial Bobkabata kabatabobbus Hogans et Benz, 1990; and Janine, Janinecaira darkthread Benz, Smith, Bullard, et Braswell, 2007 (because this particular eudactylinid looks like a dark thread).…”

“…During this time George and Greg fl ourished as scholars of parasitic copepods as well as miscellaneous other groups of parasites that captured their interests, and 31-year-old George was also collaborating with Geoff Boxshall, William E. Hogans (Huntsman Marine Science Centre, New Brunswick, Canada), and Kunihiko Izawa (Izawa Marine Biological Laboratory, Mie, Japan). His publications from this period, many co-authored with Greg, treated parasitic copepod taxonomy , 1987b, 1987, Benz 1991a, Hogans and Benz 1990, life history , Benz 1989, 1991b, 1992, and pathobiology (Benz and Adamson 1990) as well as parasitic nematodes ) and fl atworms (Benz 1987 …”

“…According to Article 36 (the Principle of Coordination) of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the establish ment of Lernaeosoleinae simultaneously es tablished the family Lernaeosoleidae Yama guti, 1963, even though Yamaguti (1963) did not specifically mention the family. Hogans and Benz (1990) were the first to use the fam ily name Lernaeosoleidae (suborder Poecilo stomatoida sensu Kabata [1979]). However, as clarified by Boxshall and Halsey (2004), a series of nomenclature errors ( Hogans and Benz 1990, Benz and Braswell 1998, Benz et al 2002) resulted in Yamaguti being over looked as the rightful authority of Lernaeoso leidae.…”

Most recently, Huys et al (2006) ar gued that lernaeosoleids (Lernaeosoleidae; comprising species representing monotypic Lernaeosolea and monotypic Bobkabata Hogans & Benz, 1990) are highly derived chondra canthids (Chondracanthidae Milne Edwards, 1840), and thus Lernaeosoleidae should be considered a junior subjective synonym of Chondracanthidae.…”
