A new Eudorylas Aczel, 1940 from Central Asia (Diptera: Pipunculidae)

Abstract: Pipunculidae). -Eudorylas manasi Kehlmaier sp. n. is described from a spécimen collected in the eastern part of the Kyrgyz Republic. The maie holotype and its genitalia are figured. The species is briefly compared to other members of the Eudorylas fascipe s species group of the Palaearctic and incorporated in an existing identification key. The pipunculid species presently recorded from the Kyrgyz Republic are listed.

A key challenge of natural history museums across the globe is to make collections accessible to researchers and the public alike. Through advances in digitization, databasing, online data curation and long-term storage, it is now possible to give access to the type material housed in museums, which represent the most precious specimens in collections. Here, we have generated a fully illustrated online catalogue of all primary and secondary Diptera types housed in the Muséum d'histoire naturelle of Geneva (MHNG). High-resolution habitus photographs of all type specimens and their labels are available on a digital repository, and an exhaustive list of this type material is provided. The MHNG collection holds 152 holotypes and 2025 paratypes with Empididae, Lauxaniidae, Sphaeroceridae and Tephritidae being the most represented families. Although the current Diptera collection is relatively recent, the ca. 150 000 specimens and associated type material are important resources for future taxonomic and systematic studies.

The Middle Eastern species of Eudorylas Aczél, 1940 are revised through an integrative taxonomic approach by combining morphological and sequence data from the mitochondrial COI barcoding gene. Four new species of the genus Eudorylas are described, males and females of three species are associated, DNA sequence data of 11 Middle Eastern Eudorylas species are provided and 15 additional species are discussed. To facilitate their recognition, we provide diagnoses, descriptions, an identification key and distributional maps for all species. The following new species are described from the Middle East: E. avis Motamedinia & Skevington sp. n., E. bihamatus Motamedinia & Skevington sp. n., E. corniculans Motamedinia & Skevington sp. n., E. nasicus Motamedinia & Skevington sp. n.
