A New Era of Diced Cartilage Rhinoplasty: Our Experience

Abstract: The use of diced cartilage grafts in reconstructive surgery was first described by Peer in 1943 though it was not for rhinoplasty. A number of studies describing diced cartilage have followed since then, but the technique has never achieved widespread use. In recent years, however, an interest in using diced cartilage for augmentation rhinoplasty has resurfaced. As surgeons revisit this technique, it is important that this technique is subjected to critical evaluation in terms of materials, approaches, and ind… Show more

“…The drawbacks are represented by palpability and visibility of diced grafts, 37 whereas the viability and stability of the graft at 1/ 2 years after insertion have been demonstrated by several histological evaluations. 38 A great deal of controversy exists about the techniques that have been advocated, and the scaffold for delivering diced cartilage has yet to be determined.…”

“…Furthermore, it obviates the need for a single large graft. Extrusion or absorption is a key problem for biomaterial, and the same is noted as an issue when it comes to diced cartilage rhinoplasty [29].…”

“…11 Blood glue, autologous tissue glue, platelet concentrate including platelet-rich plasma, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and concentrated growth factor, and fibrin glue have been reported as supplementary materials together with diced cartilage in rhinoplasty and have achieved satisfactory surgery outcomes. [12][13][14][15] However, studies that assess the complications of diced cartilage wrapped in blood products with large-scale clinical cases and long-term observation are limited. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the complications of diced cartilage wrapped in blood products through a meta-analysis.…”
