A new epithelial cell line, HBF from caudal fin of endangered yellow catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma (Gunther, 1864)

Abstract: A new epithelial cell line, Horabagrus brachysoma fin (HBF), was established from the caudal fin tissue of yellow catfish, H. brachysoma and characterized. This HBF cell line was maintained in Leibovitz's-15 medium supplemented with 15 % fetal bovine serum (FBS) and subcultured more than 62 times over a period of 20 months. The HBF cell line consists predominantly of epithelial cells and is able to grow at temperatures between 20 and 35°C with an optimum temperature of 28°C. The growth rate of these cells incr… Show more

“…Importantly, medium containing 10% FBS was also found to support moderate growth in the cells and this can be used under routine conditions for maintenance of this cell line. These findings are in accordance with previous reports of several fish cell lines (Sood et al, 2015;Swaminathan et al, 2016;). Moreover, after 4 months storage in LN 2 , the SSK cells retained good viability (>80%).…”

“…Moreover, after 4 months storage in LN 2 , the SSK cells retained good viability (>80%). Monolayer was formed within 6 days after revival and importantly, without any morphological alterations, in accordance with previous studies (Ku et al, 2010;Abdul Majeed et al, 2013Swaminathan et al, 2016).…”

“…The assays used by both groups were developed for their use in different species; they were not specific methods to measure equine cytokines (Pauli et al, 1994; Okada et al, 1997). Three other publications (Fidalgo-Carvalho et al, 2009; Karagianni et al, 2013; Swaminathan et al, 2016) have referenced Werners et al (2004), but in all cases the citation was related to the method used during the development and differentiation of e-CAS cells, and was not associated with the characteristics of these cells as equine macrophages. To our knowledge, there is no other publication in which e-CAS cells have been used in equine-specific experiments.…”

“…Fibroblasts are the main cellular components of connective tissue, and can be easily obtained and cultured in vitro; they have been widely used to study the senescence of cells, cell damage, some congenital metabolic abnormalities and enzyme defects in basic medicine and clinical medicine research (Shima et al, 1980;Shima, 1988;Mahale et al, 2008;Swaminathan et al, 2016). Previously, cultured fibroblasts were obtained from the tail fin tissue of C. auratus red var.…”
