A new eco-friendly and low cost additive in water based drilling fluids

Abstract: This study investigates the possibility of using rice husk ash as an additive to develop an environmentally friendly and low-cost drilling fluid system. The rice husk ash was added as an additive to water-based bentonite drilling fluids at different concentrations ranging from 2 wt% to 15 wt%. Rheological and filtration properties of each drilling fluid developed were measured by using a viscometer and standard low-pressure low-temperature filter press. Subsequently, cutting carrying index, minimum annulus vel… Show more

“…Although the additives were added at different concentrations, most of the examined additives generally reduce API filtration by increasing the concentration, and Table 1 shows the highest measured value. Exceptions are green olive pits, which decrease API filtration up to a concentration of 0.75% of water volume and then increase it [36], and rice husk ash, which decreases API filtration up to a concentration of 9.6% and then increases it [37]. The range of filtration reduction for different waste materials is thus very wide, ranging from 9% to 68% for mandarin peel powder.…”

“…Therefore, viscosity, filtration, pH, gel strength and weight are the most basic properties of drilling mud, and several additives are used to control these properties so that the drilling mud can fulfil its duties. Yalman et al, 2021;Yalman et al, 2022a;. It should be mentioned that apart from the additives research to increase the drilling performance, water used in the formulation of drilling mud also has an important role (Avci, 2018;Avci & Mert, 2019).…”
