A new definition of mutual impedance for application in dipole receiving antenna arrays

Abstract: Abstract-A new definition of mutual impedance for two dipole antennas is introduced to characterize the mutual coupling effect between two dipole antennas in a more accurate manner. The calculation method and the measurement procedure for the new mutual impedance are given. Measurement and theoretical results on two monopole antennas were obtained as an example. The successful applications of the new mutual impedance in the compensation of mutual coupling effect in direction finding and adaptive interference s… Show more

“…The open-circuit voltage method was proposed by Lee et al,In [21] the impedance matrix was realized as a 2N-port circuit network: N input ports from the phased coil array and N output ports to the signal processing circuits. The inputs from the phased coil array to the decoupling network are coupled signals while those output from the decoupling network to the processing circuits are decoupled signals.…”

“…With the above assumption that the magnitude and phase of the mutual coupling are different, we used RMIM measurement procedure shown in Fig. 3 to evaluate the mutual coupling between small receiving monopole arrays at the receiving end under two conditions [10] describe in Section IV. The mutual impedance 12 Z is expressed as [10]   …”

“…We modelled the transmitter as a uniform rectangular array, and examined the effects of spatial fading correlation and mutual coupling on channel capacity and symbol error rate (SER). To prove our concept, we quantify the mutual coupling of the receiving array by the receiving mutual impedance method (RMIM) [10], whereas, we examined the URA in the CST…”

“…A number of authors proposed techniques to counter errors in DOA estimation due to the mutual coupling [5][6][7][8][9]. Generally, available techniques do not consider the implication of the near zone imperfect ground on the antenna array [10].…”

“…The effects of antenna height and polarization in conjunction to ground conductivity on mutual coupling is investigated. The evaluation of mutual coupling is an extension of the technique [8] to the near-ground case. The newly-found mutual coupling is used to compensate error in DOA estimation for an array over good-ground.…”
