A non-parasitic muon production facility (HEMS, abbreviation of High rEpetition rate Muon Source) at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is proposed. HEMS will extract a 500 MeV proton beam from a proton storage ring with a circumference of 80 m to bombard a target on a linear section at a repetition rate of 100 Hz. After bombarding the target, the beam will be injected back into the proton storage ring. The proton beam will be extracted and injected repeatedly to the proton storage ring 20 times within 20 ms. For injection and extraction kicker system, the repetition rate of pulser should be as high as 1 kHz. In addition, to achieve a large kick angle with a high magnet gap aperture in a relatively small beam lattice, kicker pulser is required to generate a large excitation current. The primary challenge is to build a high repetition rate, high current, and fast injection and extraction kicker system. To achieve these requirements, a 6.25 Ω impedance matching kicker system, mainly composed of a twin-C transmission line kicker magnet and inductive adder, is developed. In this paper, we report the conceptual design of the kicker magnet and kicker pulser for HEMS. The optics of the beam extraction section of SNS ring has been published in Ref.[1] where we show that by optimizing the aperture and locations of the extraction kickers, we can accomplish both, first the elimination of the beam losses for the circulating and extracted beam, and second the minimization of the required voltage applied to the coil of the extraction kickers which deflect the beam vertically to the correct location to clear the extraction septum [2]. Also a number of papers have been published [2,3…10] to discuss the extraction devices (Kickers and Extraction Septum) of the SNS ring. Mechanical constraints however at the location of the SNS extraction kickers required that all fourteen extraction kickers be moved downstream in the ring by five centimeters. In this Technical Note we present the new optics of the SNS extraction region. The results of the study show that the placements of all the extraction kickers by five centimeters downstream can generate the required beam extraction conditions by simply raising the voltage of some of the kickers by about 2% of their original settings.

The spallation neutron source (SNS) is a next-generation high-intensity beam facility. The extraction kicker system is a high peak power, high average power, high-precision pulse-waveform, low beam impedance, and high repetition rate pulsed power system. It has been successfully designed and developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY. The system consists of fourteen extraction magnet sections inside the ring vacuum chamber and fourteen identical high-voltage modulators located in the service building. The design features a Blumlein pulse-forming-network (PFN) based topology, a low beam impedance termination, a fast current switching thyratron, and low inductance capacitor banks. It has a maximum charging voltage of 50 kV, an open circuit output of 100 kV, and a designed maximum pulsed current output of 4 kA per modulator. The overall system output will reach multiple GW peak power with a 60 pulse/s repetition rate. A prototype modulator has been successfully built and tested well above the SNS requirement. The first batch of production modulators have passed all required tests at manufacture facility and delivered to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, and the rest of the production units are under construction. The technical challenges and development results are presented in this paper.Index Terms-Accelerator power supplies, particle beam extraction, proton accelerators, pulse power systems.
