Tactation is the sensation perceived by the sense of touch, and is based on the skin's receptors. Touch is a common medium used by the general population and the sensory impaired. Tactile substitution can be used by the blind or deaf in order to: (a) enhance access to computer graphical user interfaces and (b) enhance mobility in controlled environments.The skin nerves can be stimulated through six types of receptors by mechanical, electrical, or thermal stimuli. Modalities, such as vibration and pressure, can stimulate these receptors. Advances in tactile communication using implementations of the actuating devices have been developed via several new technologies. These technologies include static or vibrating pins, focused ultrasound, electrical stimulation, surface acoustic waves, and other. This paper is a review of the state-of-the-art in the physiological and technological principles, considerations and characteristics, as well as latest implementations of microactuator-based tactile graphic displays. We also review fabrication technologies, in order to demonstrate the potential and limitations in tactile applications.

It is difficult for persons who are unfamiliar with a touchscreen like elderly or handicapped people to operate the electronic products employing touchscreen as user interface. We aim to realize a touchscreen that can provide the position of buttons and click feeling by a simple mechanism, keeping the flexibility. The proposed touchscreen consists of a switch underneath an LCD panel and the plates with identification number at the top of the LCD panel.When the touchscreen is pushed, the switch underneath the LCD module is also pressed. Thus, the user can get certain click feeling by the switch. For the plate put on the top of the LCD module, the places where icons are displayed in the touchscreen are hollowed out. Therefore, the edges around the buttons on the hollowed part give the user's finger unevenness. That is, the position and boundaries of the icons can be recognized by the finger. In addition, since the type of the plate can be determined by the ID, we can provide a variety of button arrangement according to the plate used.In order to make our touchscreen widely used, a generic design framework of software is needed. Thus, this paper shows a general framework of software, design framework, is showed.Through the application examples on the prototype, we demonstrate that the application can be developed actually byfollowing our design framework.

Η αίσθηση της αφής υλοποιείται με το δέρμα, το οποίο είναι το μεγαλύτερο αισθητήριο όργανο του ανθρωπινού σώματος. Η απτική επικοινωνία, ανάμεσα στη μηχανή και τον άνθρωπο, απαιτεί κάποια ενδιάμεση συσκευή, μια ‘απτική διεπαφή’ ή ‘απτική οθόνη’, η οποία μετατρέπει την απτική πληροφορία σε μορφή ενέργειας κατάλληλη για να διεγείρει τους υποδοχείς του δέρματος. Στο πλαίσιο της παρούσας διατριβής προτείνεται για πρώτη φορά η χρήση συστοιχιών από μετατροπείς CMUT ως πηγή εστίασης υπερήχων για χρήση σε απτικές οθόνες. Για το σκοπό αυτό σχεδιάστηκαν και προσομοιώθηκαν δυο συστοιχίες, μια αποτελούμενη από τετράγωνους μετατροπείς και μια αποτελούμενη από κυκλικούς μετατροπείς. Οι μετατροπείς CMUT μπορούν να έχουν διάφορα σχήματα από τετράγωνα μέχρι κυκλικά. Το σχήμα του μετατροπέα καθορίζει κάποιες από τις ιδιότητες του π.χ. τους τρόπους ταλάντωσης, την αλληλεπίδραση με τον αέρα κλπ.. Συνεπώς έκτος από τους τετράγωνου, η μελέτη των κυκλικών μετατροπέων δίνει πληρέστερη εικόνα για τις δυνατότητες χρήσης των μετατροπέων αυτών στις απτικές οθόνες. Η μελέτη και προσομοίωση των μετατροπέων και των αντίστοιχων συστοιχιών γίνεται με τη Μέθοδο των Πεπερασμένων Στοιχείων (ΜΠΣ). Επίσης, εκτός από το μοντέλο των πεπερασμένων στοιχείων μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για την μελέτη των μετατροπέων CMUT και το ισοδύναμο ηλεκτρικό κύκλωμα το οποίο επιλύεται με το γνωστό κώδικα SPICE. Αρχικά σχεδιάστηκε μια απτική οθόνη, η οποία βασίζεται σε φασική συστοιχία τετράγωνων μετατροπέων. Η φασική συστοιχία χρησιμοποιείται τόσο για την εστίαση των υπερήχων, όσο και για την παραγωγή πίεσης που ξεπερνά το κατώφλι διέγερσης, αναγκαία συνθήκη για την αίσθηση της αφής. Η μοντελοποίηση και προσομοίωση τόσο του μετατροπέα όσο και της φασικής συστοιχίας έγινε με την ΜΠΣ. Τα γεωμετρικά χαρακτηριστικά του μετατροπέα και της συστοιχίας βελτιστοποιήθηκαν με στόχο τη μεγιστοποίηση του πλάτους ταλάντωσης της διάταξης και της μηχανικής αντίστασης του ρευστού που παρουσιάζει το ρευστό. Η προσομοίωση έγινε με το πρόγραμμα α SPICE με τη χρήση του ισοδύναμου ηλεκτρικού κυκλώματος του μετατροπέα CMUT. Το μοντέλο επιβεβαιώθηκε συγκρίνοντας τα αποτελέσματα με τα αντίστοιχα από τη ΜΠΣ για μοντέλο κυκλικού μετατροπέα. Η παραγόμενη από τη συστοιχία πίεση στο εστιακό σημείο ξεπέρασε το κατώφλι διέγερσης τόσο στην περίπτωση της συστοιχίας τετράγωνων όσο και κυκλικών μετατροπέων.
