“…Although the size of the clear areas varied from strain to strain, no definite differences were seen between Op and Tr bacteria or in Tr bacteria before and after inoculation into chicken embryos. DISCUSSION Intravenous inoculation of 11-day-old chicken embryos has been used previously as a model for gonococcal (5,6,8)-, meningococcal (4), and streptococcal (24) infections. Colonial types of gonococci which have proven to be virulent for human volunteers (13) and chimpanzees (15) are considerably more lethal than the avirulent gonococcal colony types when injected intrave-nously into chicken embryos (5,6,8).…”

Type 1' newly described by Chan and Wiseman (1975), was also investigated. Type 1' resembles Type 1 and 2 colonies in physical characteristics but the colonies are granular, slightly crenated, and deeper gold in colour under oblique lighting.…”
