A new class of magnetorheological elastomers based on waste tire rubber and the characterization of their properties

Abstract: This paper proposes a new type of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) using waste tires rubber and identifies their performance characteristics. In this work, scrap tires were utilized as a primary matrix for the MRE without incorporation of virgin elastomers. The synthesis of scrap tire based MRE adopted high-temperature high-pressure (HTHP) sintering technique to achieve the reclaiming of vulcanized rubber. The material properties of the MRE samples were investigated through the physical and viscoelastic exam… Show more

“…The cone has a large end, foldably connected to the frame, and a small end, aligned with the magnetic gap [4]. The surround is different with the existing design that forms a seating surface for an annular molded elastomeric ring has a generally semicircular cross-section [24,26], the new surround design by flat plane cross-section with fin downwards to be able to accommodate the damping of MRF. The usefulness of O-Ring is to accommodate coil and overall attenuation to surround to be MR fluid device that can be controlled by current variations.…”

“…However, the speakers have sub-damping, i.e., surround [24,25], Surround tends to work to help the spider work. This device is usually only attached to the loudspeaker basket and moves with a constant stiffness value based on its material properties [24,26]. The loudspeaker must be accurate, strong, and smaller, with an increased acoustic quality [27].…”

“…As for some types of materials that are often used in the making impact attenuator steel S275JR UNI EN 10025 (Fe430) and 6082T6 aluminum alloy (this type of the alloy is an anti-corrosion material excellent for energy absorption but quite hard for bending), balsa wood and long fiber reinforced thermoplastic( LFRT) composite [3,4]. In this experiment, material that easy to be found is selected so it is easier to get the material and also provides lower effort in the making.…”

“…On the other hand, the absence of external magnetic during the curing; makes the structure of MREs becoming isotropic [3]. Having field-dependent modulus and damping properties, MREs have a broad range of possible applications such as vibration absorbers [2][3][4][5][6] sensing devices [7] and morphing structure [8]. The MR effect, which calculated from the storage modulus, is usually adopted to evaluate the MRE performance [9].…”
