A New CAPD Battery—Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment

Abstract: Based on recommendations by Musiek & Chermak (1994, American Journal of Audiology, 3, 23-27) and ASHA (1996, American Journal of Audiology, 5(2), 41-54), a battery of four commonly used tests was selected and recorded for use in assessing school children. These tests were labeled the Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment (MAPA) and then administered to an initial sample of 81 third grade children, along with the SCAN screening test for auditory processing disorders. Afterward, several exploratory factor anal… Show more

“…Literature is available describing the close association between CAPD and literacy and academic problems and CAPD and speech and language disorders (Bamiou, Musiek, & Luxon, 2001;Banai & Kraus, 2007;Domitz & Schow, 2000). Numerous theories have been hypothesized (although not yet proven) to explain the link between CAP, language and learning difficulties.…”

“…Both of these measures are highly sensitive to lesions in the CANS [48,50,51] and performance of children with APD can be compared to age norms available for school-age children on both of these tests [10,52]. These tests were also selected because they can provide useful measures of auditory pattern recognition and temporal ordering [46,47]. Tables 3 and 4 show the performance of all subjects in behavioral tests.…”

“…The subtests in the SCAN screening battery for children included (a) Filtered Words (to evaluate auditory closure), (b) Auditory Figure-Ground (to evaluate speech in noise), and (c) Competing Words (to evaluate dichotic speech). Screening by these tests provides consideration of the following factors: (a) monaural separation/closure, (b) binaural integration, and (c) binaural separation [46,47]. The two auditory pattern perception tests used for clinical assessment of APD were (1) Pitch Patterns Test (PPT) [48] and (2) Duration Patterns Test (DPT) [49].…”
