A new archaeorthopteran family from the upper Carboniferous of La Mure (France)

Abstract: The new archaeorthopteran family Roqueiidae is defined for the new genus and species Roqueia alpine, described from the Pennsylvanian (Kasimovian) of La Mure region (Isère, Alps, France). This new taxon is characterized by the set of characters: basal fusion of MA with R, its distal re-emergence from RP, and ending into vein MP. The Roqueiidae are tentatively assigned to the order Cnemidolestodea together with the family Cnemidolestidae.

“…The discovery of new outcrops and deposits provides new perspectives to investigate and comprehensively document insect diversity during this critical period (Nel et al, 2013). In France, there is a wealth of well-documented Carboniferous exposures teeming with fossils, including fossil insects (e.g., Nel & Roques 2021;Nel et al 2023). The strata, where fossil insects are found, were typically associated with mining activities, and mainly located in the northeast and the centralFrance (https://paleobiodb.org/).…”
