A New Approach to Permeability Inversion of Fractured Rock Masses and Its Engineering Application

Abstract: This paper presents a new seepage inversion technique to predict the permeability coefficient of the rock mass with developed fracture or fault. With the measured data of flow and water head of boreholes, the permeability coefficient of the rock masses near the boreholes are obtained by inverse calculation on the basis of unsteady seepage tests. Then, a flexible tolerance method is proposed to invert the permeability coefficient of rock masses in different zones of the reservoir area. This comprehensive invers… Show more

“…The material proprieties of the tailings dam for verification are listed in Table 1 , and the permeability of materials is regarded as isotropic. The material permeability is dominant for the seepage field in a dam, so the object of back analysis is often just the permeability of material, even in saturated-unsaturated seepage analysis [ 37 , 38 , 40 ]. Hence, only the permeability of the equivalent drainage structure is inverted in this study.…”

“…Darcy’s law is accepted to describe the water flow in the unsaturated and saturated zone of tailings dam in this paper. When the compressibility of water and the influence of void gas on water flow movement are ignored, the heterogeneous anisotropic saturated–unsaturated seepage model can be expressed as [ 37 , 38 ]: where and denote divergence and gradient of , respectively. is the saturated hydraulic conductivity matrix.…”

“…e equivalent continuum model simplifies the study of the mechanical behavior of fractured rock mass and provides convenience for studying the elastic modulus of fractured rock. On the other hand, the natural rock mass is generally saturated with groundwater, which produces seepage within the rock mass [17,18]. e seepage characteristics are determined by the fractures.…”
