A new approach for the modelling of chestnut wood photo-degradation monitored by different spectroscopic techniques

Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the colour and chemical modifications of the surfaces in chestnut wood samples as a consequence of irradiating in a controlled environment. The changes were investigated by a new analytical approach by combining traditional techniques such as reflectance spectrophotometry in the visible range and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with new hyperspectral imaging, in order to obtain forecast models to describe the phenomenon. The statistical elaboration of the experimental d… Show more

“…The statistically significant effect of pretreatment on the color parameters L*, a*, and b* was observed after AA (p < 0.05). The increase of values a* and b* showing a tendency for the wood surface to turn reddish and yellowish during AA and the decrease of L* (negative value) indicating a tendency to turn into darker color, was also observed in other studies [39][40][41]. The darkening could be directly influenced by UV absorber properties that may…”

“…The rate of yellowing was shown to be well correlated with changes due to oxidation as visualised by infra-red and novel hyperspectral imaging for photodegradation of chestnut wood under simulated solar UV radiation. 358 A similar correlation was also reported between the residual lignin content and tensile strength during natural weathering of fir-wood. 360 If generally applicable, such correlations allow easier, non-invasive measurements (particularly yellowness index) to be used to assess the progress of oxidative changes in the wood.…”

“…The colour change caused by the sunshine and the rain for natural wood is a well investigated phenomenon [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. But the colour change caused by the photodegradation for thermally treated wood is not well researched, and the published results are sometimes contradictory.…”
