A new approach for interexaminer reliability data analysis on dental caries calibration

Abstract: Objectivesa) to evaluate the interexaminer reliability in caries detection considering different diagnostic thresholds and b) to indicate, by using Kappa statistics, the best way of measuring interexaminer agreement during the calibration process in dental caries surveys.MethodsEleven dentists participated in the initial training, which was divided into theoretical discussions and practical activities, and calibration exercises, performed at baseline, 3 and 6 months after the initial training. For the examinat… Show more

“…Inter-examiner agreement was confirmed during theoretical discussions when examiners showed photographic slides containing clinical examples of each parameter to be investigated in the study. During the discussions the examiners' knowledge was evaluated and they were instructed in the criteria and examination methods to be used so as to achieve an initial standardization [18].…”

“…After a brief training, two examiners (JWL, JEL) performed repeated measurements of the mPI and mSBI using clinical photographs one week apart. The intra-examiner reproducibility and inter-examiner reliability of the measurements of the mPI and mSBI were assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient and Kappa statistics [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…The most common epidemiologic index for caries prevalence is the Decayed, Missing and Filled (DMF) Index, which was first introduced in 1930 and later on recommended by the World Health Organization . While reliability is considered to be good, validity has often been questioned . Furthermore, the Periodontal Screening (and Recording) Index (PSI/PSR) is recommended by the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology as a simple and effective system to detect periodontal disease .…”

[10][11][12][13][14][15] Furthermore, the Periodontal Screening (and Recording) Index (PSI/PSR) is recommended by the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology as a simple and effective system to detect periodontal disease. 16 However, convincing evidence of its reliability and validity is lacking.…”
