A New Approach for Estimating the Observation Impact in Ensemble–Variational Data Assimilation

Abstract: Two types of approaches are commonly used for estimating the impact of arbitrary subsets of observations on short-range forecast error. The first was developed for variational data assimilation systems and requires the adjoint of the forecast model. Comparable approaches were developed for use with the ensemble Kalman filter and rely on ensembles of forecasts. In this study, a new approach for computing observation impact is proposed for ensemble–variational data assimilation (EnVar). Like standard adjoint app… Show more

“…Compared to operational systems (e.g. O13; LM14; H17; C18; Buehner et al , ), AIRCFT and AMSU‐A radiances generally show smaller contributions in the NICAM‐LETKF maybe because fewer observations are assimilated (Figure d).…”

“…Lien et al () proposed an efficient approach to assimilating a new observing system using the EFSO. Recently, Buehner et al () proposed a new hybrid FSO, in which DA uses the adjoint model and FSO employs ensemble forecasts, for a hybrid ensemble‐variational data assimilation system.…”

“…Fourth, the Hybrid EnVar DA system is used in many operational centers, and the observations assimilated in the EnKF subsystem within are usually not identical to those assimilated in the main variational system. For this reason and the fact that it is more consistent with EnVar, the hybrid formulation of FSO (Buehner et al 2018) may be preferable in such DA systems. It is thus worth comparing the PQC performance based on both HFSO and EFSO in an EnVar system.…”

“…This ensemble FSO (EFSO) approach directly maps, using the readily available ensemble forecasts from the DA system, the forecast error changes between two consecutive forecasts by DA to each individual observation. Recently, a hybrid approach (HFSO; Buehner et al 2018) was developed that projects the forecast sensitivity to analysis using the ensemble forecasts as in EFSO, but Denotes content that is immediately available upon publication as open access.…”
