A New Algorithm for Detecting Failure to Clear Mode of Circuit Breakers Using Fundamental Frequency Component of Voltage Signals

Abstract: This paper introduces a new algorithm for the early detection of abnormal arcing conditions of circuit breakers (CBs). Any interruption with a higher arcing time compared to maximum permissible arcing time (MPAT) of CB is defined as a CB failure to clear mode. Measuring CB arcing time is not easy because there is no control on the mechanical opening and closing instants of CB contacts. Nevertheless, there is a correlation between the spectral energy densities of CB arcing voltages and arcing times of CB. This … Show more

“…The second one refers to the circuit breaker contacts that do not open due to mechanical issues or wiring disconnections in the trip circuit. Many techniques have been proposed to detect circuit breaker failure [20], [21]. Whenever a failure is identified by the existing methods, the tripping strategy can be further implemented for the circuit breaker failure to isolate the failed circuit breaker and the fault.…”

“…This could be due to mechanical problems such as incomplete contact opening or dielectric problems such as contaminated oil or loss of vacuum. A method to detect 'Failure to Clear' has been presented in [26].…”

“…Accidents that cause equipment damage and huge economic losses due to sensor failure also occur from time to time. According to statistics, the sensor failures in general automation systems account for more than 45% of all failures [2,3]. However, once the sensor fails, the performance of the control system will be degraded at rst, and then catastrophic consequences will be caused.…”
