Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) is a primary remote sensing tool utilized in land-cover mapping and change detection. Land-cover patches are the primary data source for landscape metrics and ecological indicator calculations; however, their application to visual landscape character (VLC) indicators was little investigated to date. To bridge the knowledge gap between GEOBIA and VLC, this paper puts forward the theoretical concept of using viewpoint as a landscape imageability indicator into the practice of a multi-temporal land-cover case study and explains how to interpret the indicator. The study extends the application of GEOBIA to visual landscape indicator calculations. In doing so, eight different remote sensing imageries are the object of GEOBIA, starting from a historical aerial photograph (1957) and CORONA declassified scene (1965) to contemporary (2018) UAV-delivered imagery. The multi-temporal GEOBIA-delivered land-cover patches are utilized to find the minimal isovist set of viewpoints and to calculate three imageability indicators: the number, density, and spacing of viewpoints. The calculated indicator values, viewpoint rank, and spatial arrangements allow us to describe the scale, direction, rate, and reasons for VLC changes over the analyzed 60 years of landscape evolution. We found that the case study nature reserve (“Kózki”, Poland) landscape imageability transformed from visually impressive openness to imageability due to the impression of several landscape rooms enclosed by forest walls. Our results provide proof that the number, rank, and spatial arrangement of viewpoints constitute landscape imageability measured with the proposed indicators. Discussing the method’s technical limitations, we believe that our findings contribute to a better understanding of land-cover change impact on visual landscape structure dynamics and further VLC indicator development.

O presente artigo tratará da descrição e conceituação de um dispositivo baseado em tecnologias da informação capaz de avaliar a visibilidade de bens tombados, criando representações automatizadas para essas leituras. Para tanto, partirá de discussão sobre o conceito de visibilidade de bens tombados, apontando as referências em fóruns internacionais e os entendimentos construídos a partir da experiência de órgãos de proteção, buscando extrair-lhes um pensamento geral. Depois, são trazidas teorias de percepção do espaço que adotam uma abordagem quantitativa e que trazem importantes insights para o problema. Esse conhecimento serve de base para a formalização de um pensamento geral de análise, descrito através de diagramas. Como resultados, são apresentados os primeiros testes de implantação em ambiente computacional e, tratando-se de uma pesquisa em andamento, conclui-se com uma discussão sobre os limites e potencialidades observados.*****This article describes and conceptualizes a device based on information technologies capable of evaluating aspects of the environment of built cultural heritages, creating automated representations. In order to do so, it will start from a discussion about the management of the surrounding areas of these buildings, from its origins to the experiences of the national protection agency (IPHAN), where the terms environment and visibility are related. Then we introduce theories of space perception that use a quantitative approach and bring important insights to the problem. This knowledge serves as the basis for the formalization of a general thought of analysis, described through diagrams. As results, we present the first tests of implementation in the computational environment and, as a research in progress, we conclude with a discussion about the limits and potentialities observed.

Along with a rapid growth in the volume of user-generated video clips, efficient video retrieval methods have become one of the most critical challenges in multimedia management. In this article, we propose a service framework using geographic information for retrieval of the videos on the web. The main idea is to describe and query videos by video-related geographic data such as video location, field of view and trajectory. Based on the point, line and polygon description for videos, we define the commonly used video retrieval methods. A video retrieval service framework and the service interfaces are designed based on the REST architecture. A prototype system is also implemented to test the services. The experiment shows that the proposed video description, retrieval methods and web services are feasible and useful. We believe that the integration of geographical video retrieval methods into existing methods will promote the geo-tagged video sharing, discovery and consumption in various web applications.
