A New Adaptive Zoning Technique for Handwritten Digit Recognition

Abstract: In this paper we present a new adaptive zoning technique based on Voronoi tessellation for the task of handwritten digit recognition. This technique extracts features according to an optimal zoning distribution, obtained by an evolutionary-strategy based search. Several experiments have been conducted on the MNIST and the USPS datasets to investigate the proposed approach. Comparisons with regular square zoning reveal that the presented zoning strategy achieves better results for any type of SVM classifier. Fu… Show more

“…For example, simplified versions of the shape context descriptor have been used in example-based keyword spotting architectures by Lladós and Sánchez [27] or by Fernández et al [11]. Zoning-based characteristics have also been widely used to represent word images holistically, e.g., [17,20]. A combination of Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern descriptors has been proposed by Kovalchuk et al in [21] in a segmentation-free keyword spotting scenario.…”

“…Finally, Impedovo et al introduced a genetic algorithm based clustering approach using zoning features [19] whereas an adaptive zoning techniques for handwritten digit recognition are presented [20,21] where the features are extracted according to an optimal zoning distribution.…”

“…Spatial and transform domain are two major categories in Feature extraction techniques. Invariant moments [1], projections [2,64], zoning feature [3], an adaptive zoning techniques [4], [5], [55] and [6],gradient based features [7][8] [10] are some of examples of spatial domain techniques. In spatial domain statistical or structural or both [9][10][11][12][13] properties can be used for extracting features.…”
