Dental topographic analysis is the quantitative assessment of shape of three-dimensional models of tooth crowns and component features. Molar topographic curvature, relief, and complexity correlate with aspects of feeding behavior in certain living primates, and have been employed to investigate dietary ecology in extant and extinct primate species. This study investigates whether dental topography correlates with diet among a diverse sample of living platyrrhines, and compares platyrrhine topography with that of prosimians. We sampled 111 lower second molars of 11 platyrrhine genera and 121 of 20 prosimian genera. For each tooth we calculated Dirichlet normal energy (DNE), relief index (RFI), and orientation patch count (OPCR), quantifying surface curvature, relief, and complexity respectively. Shearing ratios and quotients were also measured. Statistical analyses partitioned effects of diet and taxon on topography in platyrrhines alone and relative to prosimians. Discriminant function analyses assessed predictive diet models. Results indicate that platyrrhine dental topography correlates to dietary preference, and platyrrhine-only predictive models yield high rates of accuracy. The same is true for prosimians. Topographic variance is broadly similar among platyrrhines and prosimians. One exception is that platyrrhines display higher average relief and lower relief variance, possibly related to lower relative molar size and functional links between relief and tooth longevity distinct from curvature or complexity. Explicitly incorporating phylogenetic distance matrices into statistical analyses of the combined platyrrhine-prosimian sample results in loss of significance of dietary effects for OPCR and SQ, while greatly increasing dietary significance of RFI.

The position of dental wear facets depends on crown morphology, antagonistic relation, and occlusal movements. The correspondence between specific directions of movements and the position of wear facets cannot be easily evaluated in vivo and has never been tested experimentally. An experimental analysis was carried out to provide evidence that explicit occlusal movements are responsible for the spatial position of wears facets. Unworn dental stone replicas of modern human prosthetic molar were mounted in a physical dental articulator, and the upper dental arch was ground against the lowers to create a wear facet pattern. The relief guided movements were constrained sequentially by means of three different condyle box setups: (1) experienced-based mean values for sagittal condyle inclination, lateroretrusion, Benett angle, and transversal condyle inclination were used; (2) pure retrusion and immediate side shift movements were added; (3) retrusion and immediate side shift were increased. Finally, the upper and lower first molars were surface scanned and macrowear facets were quantified in four wear stages. The results show that a wear facet pattern was created similar to what is seen on human molars in vivo occlusion. Some facets only developed if specific directions of movement were carried out. Therefore, we posit that an analysis of wear facet patterns is useful in recreating the individual occlusal movements. This information can be used not only to guide reproducible functional reconstructions of crown relief and dental arches but also to deduce jaw movements when, for example, isolated primate teeth are discovered in paleontological contexts. Dental topographic analysis allows comparisons of variably worn teeth within and between species to infer relationships between dental form and diet in living primates, with implications for reconstructing feeding adaptations of fossil forms. Although analyses to date have been limited mainly to the M(2)s of a few primate taxa, these suggest that dental topographic analysis holds considerable promise. Still, larger samples including a greater range of species and different tooth types are needed to determine the potential of this approach. Here we examine dental topography of molar teeth of Cercocebus torquatus (n=48), Cercopithecus campbelli (n=50), Colobus polykomos (n=50), and Procolobus badius (n=50). This is the first such study of large samples of Old World monkeys, and the first to include analyses of both M(1)s and M(2)s. Average slope, relief, and surface angularity were computed and compared among tooth types, wear stages, and species. Results suggest that (1) data for M(1)s and M(2)s cannot be compared directly; (2) slope and relief decline with wear on M(2)s of all taxa, and M(1)s of the colobines, whereas angularity does not generally change except in the most worn specimens; and (3) folivorous colobines tend to have more sloping surfaces and more relief than do frugivorous cercopithecines, though angularity does not clearly separate taxa by diet.
