A neurosurgical simulation of skull base tumors using a 3D printed rapid prototyping model containing mesh structures

Abstract: The deep regions of PR models containing mesh skull base tumors were easy to visualize. This 3D printing-based method might be applicable to various surgical simulations.

“…For instance, cartilaginous tissues for dissection and drilling needed a liquid coating to increase the physical strength of a structure created by BJ in contrast to the infiltrations of elastomeric resins meant to increase its flexibility. 27 Similarly, BJ was used for tumours in the context of surgical simulation, 26 arteries to practise transcatheter valve replacements, 17 as well as hepatic segments 50 and hearts 17 51 to teach human anatomy.…”

“…Plaster-based color 3D binder jetting is a technique able to produce the required multicolor models 7 . Whereas in its standard configurations only the surface of an object can be colored, herein a modified technique is described to ensure volumetric application of color to internal anatomical structures.…”

“…What's more, with advanced 3D printing skull base models, students can use the effective methods to understand the complex anatomy of the head. And neurosurgical residents can have endoscopic simulation-based training to decrease the learning curve [14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Some studies discussed the development of 3D-printed models which can be used in endoscopic skull base surgery, and some studies described 3D-printed physical simulators that are bene t to learning endoscopic techniques [9,15,[18][19][20][21]. However, few studies reported the application experience of 3D-printing technology used in skull base endoscopic surgery.…”
