This paper outlines the early history of optimization technology for the design of microwave circuits-a personal journey filled with aspirations, academic contributions, and commercial innovations. Microwave engineers have evolved from being consumers of mathematical optimization algorithms to originators of exciting concepts and technologies that have spread far beyond the boundaries of microwaves. From the early days of simple direct search algorithms based on heuristic methods through gradient-based electromagnetic optimization to space mapping technology we arrive at today's surrogate methodologies. Our path finally connects to today's multi-physics, system-level, and measurement-based optimization challenges exploiting confined and feature-based surrogates, cognition-driven space mapping, Bayesian approaches, and more. Our story recognizes visionaries such as William J. Getsinger of the 1960s and Robert Pucel of the 1980s, and highlights a seminal decades-long collaboration with mathematician Kaj Madsen. We address not only academic contributions that provide proof of concept, but also indicate early formative milestones in the development of commercially competitive software specifically featuring optimization technology.

The intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) can be implemented in radio systems in order to provide the cooperative communication services. In fact, the cooperative communication can increase the received signal strength at the communication receiver. Moreover, it can let transmitters send their signals with low power. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) can degrade the communication system performance. The total interfering power, affecting a communication system, can increase the bit error rate (BER). The large BER value is not good issue as it leads to a low system performance. Therefore, there should be tools and techniques in order to balance and compensate the existing BER. In fact, there are a lot of tools that can compensate the BER effect. We are concerned with the cooperative millimeter wave systems that are based on IRSs which are affected by EMI. Such systems have non-satisfied performance due to the high path losses as well as the existing EMI. These systems will be modeled and simulated. Furthermore, the space time block codes (STBC) are applied in order to compensate the bad performance of such systems. Really, the STBC codes can greatly compensate the bad effects of the high path loss as well as the large interference.

The cooperative communication techniques, wherein several transmitters and one receiver are implemented, can greatly increase the performance of a communication system. In fact, the cooperative communication has been launched since the fourth generation mobile systems. The two competing cooperative techniques are; relays and intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS). It is known that the electromagnetic interference (EMI) can degrade a radio system performance. In this paper, the EMI, affecting an IRS-based communication system, is mathematically modeled and simulated. The interference level can be affected by the channel parameters which are the 5G path loss models. In order to improve the communication system performance, Alamouti codes are applied. The gain, offered by diversity codes "Alamouti", can reduce the degradation of the performance due to the EMI existence. The complete mathematical model is carried out as well as the simulation model. The simulation results show that the cooperative Alamouti-coded 5G radio systems have a satisfying performance even the EMI exists.
