A Near‐Real‐Time Version of the Cross‐Calibrated Multiplatform (CCMP) Ocean Surface Wind Velocity Data Set

Abstract: The Cross‐Calibrated Multiplatform (CCMP) ocean surface wind data set was originally developed by Atlas and coworkers to blend cross‐calibrated satellite winds, in situ data, and wind analyses from numerical weather prediction. CCMP uses a variational analysis method to smoothly blend these data sources into a gap‐free gridded wind estimate every 6 hr. CCMP version 2.0 is currently produced by Remote Sensing Systems using consistently cross‐calibrated satellite winds, in situ data from moored buoys, and backgr… Show more

“…Prior to the USV anemometer being damaged in March 2019, there is no mean difference between USV-measured and Cross-Calibrated MultiPlatform Near Real Time V2.0 (CCMP V2) wind speed (Mears et al, 2019) or ERA-Interim Reanalysis (Dee et al, 2011) wind speed with a variance around wind speed residuals of ±1.8 m s −1 and ±2.0 m s −1 , respectively ( Figure S2). NCEP-DOE AMIP-II Reanalysis 2 (NCEP-2) (Kanamitsu et al, 2002) and ERA5 (Hersbach et al, 2020) wind speeds have lower wind speed by 1.0 and 0.1 m s −1 , respectively, than measured on the USV with a variance around the mean bias of ±3.9 and ± 1.4 m s −1 , respectively.…”

“…Remote Sensing Systems produced the Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) wind. The CCMP Version 2.0 contains 6-hourly 0.25° gridded vector winds at 10 m (Mears et al, 2019). The model wave data are obtained from the Météo-France WAve Model (MFWAM), a global wave forecasting model via the Copernicus Marine Environment Management Service (CMEMS).…”

“…Readers can refer to Donlon et al (2012) for details. Six-hourly cross-calibrated multiplatform (CCMP) version 2.0 gridded surface wind vectors (Atlas et al, 2011;Mears et al, 2019) were used to examine the impacts of surface winds on variations in bottom layer temperatures and DO concentrations. The CCMP wind analysis is produced by combining consistently cross-calibrated satellite microwave winds, in situ observations from moored buoys, and model winds using the variational analysis method (Atlas et al, 1996;Hoffman et al, 2003).…”
