A near-infrared reflectance spectroscopic method for the direct analysis of several fodder-related chemical components in drumstick (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaves

Abstract: The drumstick tree has traditionally been used as foodstuff and fodder in several countries. Due to its high nutritional value and good biomass production, interest in this plant has increased in recent years. It has therefore become important to rapidly and accurately evaluate drumstick quality. In this study, we addressed the optimization of Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to analyze crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, iron (Fe), and potassium (K) in a variety of drumstick accessions (N = 111) represent… Show more

“…In fact, NIRS is very difficult to attain the regression relationship and repeatability as well as those of the wet chemical measurement (R 2 > 0.99), especially when the model is adaptable to a wide range of samples with different characteristics influenced by various factors. Practically, the thumb rule is that RPD values > 10 are considered equivalent effectiveness to the reference method, whereas RPD values < 2.5 indicate that NIRS is not suitable for the quantitative determination of the components [9]. For the present study, the RPD values of the best model were ≥ 3.0 (Table 1), implying that the model is effective for the analytical purposes.…”

“…Savitzky-Golay smoothing can wipe out high frequency information and enhance the ratio of signal to noise. Standard normal variate can reduce spectral and particle size variability [9,18]. In the present study, eight pretreatments including vector normalization, minimum-maximum normalization, first derivative, second derivative, multivariate scattering correction, first derivative + minus a straight line, first derivative + vector normalization and first derivative + multivariate scattering correction, were applied to process the spectra.…”

“…Therefore, rapid and accurate determination of feed parameters has a key role both in nutritional diets of ruminants and in bioenergy conversion (3). But, the mainly chemical methods (Kjeldahl, Van Soest, Soxhlet, etc) used in quality (nutrients, crude protein, crude fat, crude cellulose, crude ash and nitrogen-free substances) determination are considerably expensive and time-consuming methods (4,5). Moreover, the chemicals used in analyses may not only negatively affect the health of people working in laboratories (6) but will also give rise to the necessity of removing chemical waste in order to prevent environmental pollution following the analyses (7).…”
