A nationwide survey of hepatitis E virus infection in the general population of Japan

Abstract: To investigate nationwide the prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in the general population of Japan, serum samples were collected from 22,027 individuals (9,686 males and 12,341 females; age, mean +/- standard deviation: 56.8 +/- 16.7 years; range: 20-108 years) who lived in 30 prefectures located in Hokkaido, mainland Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu of Japan and underwent health check-ups during 2002-2007, and were tested for the presence of IgG, IgM, and IgA classes of antibodies to HEV (anti-HEV) b… Show more

“…In the relatively wealthy nations of Europe, North America, and East Asia, human infections with HEV-3 and HEV-4 are often asymptomatic (33,125), though more virulent strains appear to exist (126,127). In these settings, autochthonous HEV-3 appears to pose the greatest threat to people with chronic medical conditions that require immunosuppressive therapy or that directly compromise the immune system and/or liver (128)(129)(130).…”

“…Based on the literature, among general populations of other countries, overall pre-valence of HEV in Bangladesh was 22.5%, in England 13%, in India 1.9%, and in Japan 5.3% (11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…In Japan, the rate of positive anti-HEV IgG antibodies among healthy volunteers is 5.3%, compared to 0.2% for anti-IgM antibodies and 0.01-0.2% for HEV-RNA (13)(14)(15). It is estimated that HEV infection occurs in approximately 150,000 people each year, almost all of whom are asymptomatic.…”
