A national audit of pollen immunotherapy for children in the United Kingdom: patient selection and programme safety

Abstract: Pollen SIT is available across England, though small numbers of children are being treated. Current national guidelines to exclude asthmatic children in SIT programmes are not being adhered to by most specialist paediatric allergy centres. SCIT and SLIT has been well tolerated. Review of patient selection criteria is needed and may allow greater use of this therapeutic option in appropriate clinical settings.

“…Two commercial grass products have received European market authorization for patients at least 5 years of age (138,139). Local oral reactions are experienced in up to three quarter of the patients but are mild to moderate, self-resolve after a few minutes and usually disappear after a few weeks therapy (129,134,140,141). Severe adverse reactions have been seen but are very rare (142).…”

“…Again, the evidence for efficacy is not as strong as in adult, but both SCIT and SLIT seem effective and safe in children when used to treat AR with or without asthma. In this regard, Vance et al's audit of current immunotherapy practice is useful [146]. It revealed that few children are currently treated with SCIT or SLIT in the United Kingdom, although it is well tolerated.…”
