“…In 2 Finnish studies, it was found that up to 31% of the children have been adenoidectomized before the age of 3 years. 8,9 We found a significant correlation between the MRI scores and the severity of nasal obstruction and discharge and fever confirming the results of a study done on adults. 10 None of the other symptoms or the duration of the symptoms predicted the paranasal sinus findings.…”

“…Although the otitis was evidenced only in the first year of life, the linguistic and language skills deficits were persistent, being observed in all stages, including at nine years old. These findings are consistent with those observed by Luotonen et al (1998) in a population-based study with 1708 Finnish children.…”

“…Inconsistency and alterations in stimulation of the peripheral auditory system in the first three years of life, due to chronic otitis, lead to an equally inconsistent sound stimulation to the central auditory nervous system, compromising the development of auditory skills and the construction of phonological representations (Luotonen et al, 1998). Despite infection remission still in early childhood, changes in the auditory processing remain and have harmful and persistent effects on phonological representations and in the acquisition of reading and writing skills.…”

“…Children with otitis media typically have difficulties with language processing and social behavior. Researchers have reported that elementary aged children with a history of otitis media perform poorly on tests of auditory processing ability (Updike & Thornburg, 1992), speech and reading (Bellussi et al, 2005), reading ability (Updike & Thornburg, 1992), reading comprehension (Luotonen et al, 1998), vocabulary (Bellussi et al, 2005), and expressive language (Rach, Zielhuis, & van den Broek, 1988). However, other studies suggest that children with a history of otitis media do not have impaired verbal comprehension at ages 2-4 years (Rach et al, 1988), and may not have difficulties understanding speech, although the authors acknowledged high variability in the otitis media group (Keogh et al, 2005).…”
