A narrative review of musculoskeletal problems of the lower extremity and back associated with the interface between occupational tasks, feet, footwear and flooring

Abstract: At least 50% of workers are exposed to the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) due to spending prolonged hours standing at work. There is a lack of information regarding issues with the feet, solutions to the problem, and links between MSD, feet, footwear and flooring. The present article provides a narrative review of the research in this area, based on 31 papers. Workers who stand for large proportions of the working day had a level of MSD considerably greater than a normal population. Muscle co-activati… Show more

“…Footwear can impact lower limb health and general mobility both positively and negatively across the lifespan [ 1 ]. Different footwear features have an effect on the biomechanics of standing and gait and hence can influence musculoskeletal function and dysfunction [ 2 , 3 ]. As a result, footwear is of relevance to a diverse range of population groups.…”

“…Prolonged standing is necessary in various occupations including health care, food service, factory and retail environments (Waters and Dick, 2015;Anderson, Williams &Nester, 2016). There is a 1.48-1.9fold increased risk of low back pain and 1.7 fold increase in risk of lower extremity or foot pain when standing for prolonged periods (Andersen, Haahr & Frost, 2007;Tissot, Messing, & Stock, 2009;Sterud & Tynes, 2013).…”

“…The study was cross sectional with the design based on previous validated surveys, questionnaires and studies that investigated foot health [16], musculoskeletal discomfort [17,18] and the footwear needs of workers [11,19]. Content validity was considered via discussions with Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Occupational injury and wine industry representatives and the survey questions were modi ed so as to be appropriate for the wine industry and capture the relevant areas of concern.…”
