A murine retrovirus induces proliferation of unique lymphoid cell lines expressing T-cell-receptor structures utilizing common variable region alpha and beta chain genes.

Abstract: A murine radiation leukemia virus (RadLV) has been shown to induce in vitro proliferation of an unusual subset of lymphoid cells from spleen. They have the unusual property of expressing CD3/T-cell receptor a and ,B chains (TCR-a,l) in the absence ofother T-cell markers such as Thy-i, CD4, and CD8. Cell lines induced in two mouse strains with RadLV produced by the C6VL/1 thymoma all specifically utilize common Va3 and V.88.2 variable region genes in the formation of a TCR structure. Each of these cell lines ha… Show more

“…Other evidence indicates that D cell precursors share phenotypic characteristics with lymphoid precursors present in thymus and can be isolated by cell sorting along with lymphoid precursor cells [20,21]. The isolation of transformed cell lines expressing some T cell-specific markers as well as functional properties resembhng D cells also supports a lineage relationship between D cells and early lymphoid precursors [22,23].…”

“…A T-cell-tropic murine retrovirus has been shown to immortalize a subset of lymphoid cells in spleen [22] which display some properties resembling D cells. Cell lines display lineage infidelity in that they express the B220 (CD45) marker of B and pre B cells and the NK 1.1 marker of natural killer cells as well as components of the T-cell receptor/CD3 complex [22,23]. They do not express any myeioid cell markers, nor has it been possible to induce expression of specific markers of myeioid cells by various means of stimulation.…”
