A multitaxonomic assessment of Natura 2000 effectiveness across European biogeographic regions

Lorenzo Ricci,
Michele Di Musciano,
Francesco Maria Sabatini
et al.

Abstract: The Natura 2000 (N2K) protected area (PA) network is a crucial tool to limit biodiversity loss in Europe. Despite covering 18% of EU's land area, its effectiveness at conserving biodiversity across taxa and biogeographic regions remains uncertain. Testing this effectiveness is, however, difficult as it requires considering the non‐random location of PAs, and many possible confounding factors. Here, we used propensity score matching accounting for the confounding effects of biogeographic regions, terrain rugged… Show more

“…While insects are declining in many parts of the world, they constitute only 8% of the assessed species in the IUCN Red List. A key role in safeguarding many insect species could be played by protected areas 77 , 78 . In Poland, protected areas, especially national parks, are very important refuges for andrenid bees 10 , 62 .…”

“…However, they are primarily designated based on ecological and biogeographical criteria to meet specific conservation objectives. A recent multi-taxonomic assessment across European biogeographic regions shows that the Natura 2000 network is effective in limiting biodiversity loss [10]. Yet, against a backdrop of persistent, continent-wide declines in biodiversity, there are calls for improvements to the network, including data-improved red list assessments, increased focus on those sites with the highest conservation value, species-specific conservation plans, augmented population monitoring, and substantial financial resource allocation for research, implementation, and education [39,40].…”

“…As a large raptor, the white-tailed eagle could possibly contribute to the achievement of broader biodiversity goals [7,8], especially within the context of a reserve network, like Natura 2000 [9]. Indeed, a white-tailed eagle presence might be used to overcome the difficulty of testing the effectiveness of Natura 2000, and help justify the protected status of some areas [10].…”
