A multisensory approach to measure public space quality in the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Abstract: The measurement of the quality of public space is important in spatial planning as a first step towards improved urban quality. It would seem as if city builders sometimes use their subjective judgements of place quality through incomprehensive sensory tools and not the users' sensory experience and aspirations. Based on the multisensory experiences and aspirations of users as they interact with the streetscapes and public parks in Bulawayo, the purpose of this article was to develop and test the utility of a … Show more

“…For example, Aletta et al (2016) conducted sound experiments in public spaces, by recording and monitoring audio and human behaviour, and discovered how ambient sounds and music modulate people's behaviors. Muleya et al (2020) created a multi-sensory public-space-quality measurement tool through field measurements, sample questionnaires, and assignment analysis and realized the quantitative design of the six senses: visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, olfaction, and active engagement.…”

“…Most criteria he proposes refers to creating an atmosphere of inviting people to use urban space as unrestricted as possible. Muleya and Campbell (2020) pointed out that the previous studies biased towards the visual sense, but the other senses should also to be considered in the public space quality measurement.…”

“…The former generally reflects the overall quality through the characteristics and service level of several components of the space. The latter uses “people” as the medium to investigate users’ perception in the space (Long and Tang, 2019; Muleya and Campbell, 2020). The quality of urban public space affects citizens’ behavior, cognition, and mental outlook (Lynch, 1964; Schmidt and Németh, 2010).…”

“…The existing literature has traditionally reviewed studies about the public space quality worldwide, and only focused on a specific direction or scale of relevant studies, such as methods, indicators, or street space. Nicholas Muleya and Malene Campbell reviewed the current public space quality measuring indicators of different sensory quality principles, indicating that the existing literature and methods are improving, but further attention should be paid to user contributions and the multi-sensory quality of public areas (Muleya and Campbell, 2020). Some Chinese researchers also reviewed the studies on urban public space quality.…”
