Late Pleis to cene and Ho lo cene en vi ron men tal evo lu tion of the Wkra River Val ley near Bielawy Go³uskie (cen tral Po land) re corded in palaeo-ox bow lake de pos its Monika This study aimed to re con struct en vi ron men tal changes in the Wkra River Val ley near Bielawy Go³uskie (cen tral Po land) based on geo chem i cal, palynological and subfossil Cladocera anal y sis of de pos its fill ing a palaeo-ox bow lake. Two sed iment bore holes col lected from the palaeochannel bend (BG-1) and neck (BG-2) in clude full se quences of or ganic de pos its ly ing on clastic de pos its. The lower part of the BG-1 bore hole con tains gyttja that ac cu mu lated dur ing the Youn ger Dryas and the Preboreal, which is cov ered by reed peat of Preboreal and Bo real age. On top of this is al der peat that ac cu mu lated during the At lan tic. The ages of the gyttja and peat were con firmed by both ra dio car bon dat ing and palynological anal y sis. The peats are char ac ter ized by a sig nif i cant con tent of or ganic mat ter, which is rel a tively sta ble over time. This in di cates a low inten sity of me chan i cal de nu da tion in the catch ment, which is sup ported by low con cen tra tions of alu mi num and po tas sium. Cal cium val ues greatly ex ceed these el e ments, sug gest ing that the lake was mainly fed by ground wa ter. Vari a tion in trophic con di tions over time is in di cated by a ver ti cal vari abil ity in the con tent of ni tro gen, as well as by the Cladocera pop u la tion. The strong de com po si tion of peat in the top layer of the mire, and in creased con cen tra tions of phos pho rus and heavy met als, testify to in creas ing hu man ac tiv ity dur ing the most re cent time pe ri ods.

Warszawa.Cladoceran-based paleotemperature estimates for the Younger Dryas for ten sections of paleo-oxbow lakes, valley mires, and lacustrine sediments from central Poland are presented, and their potential usefulness to climatostratigraphy is described. Most of the changes observed in the cladoceran assemblages are responses to climate changes. The cladoceran-based temperature reconstructions reflect cold conditions during the Younger Dryas (YD) and allow a division of this period into two phases: an older colder phase, between 12,800 and 12,000 cal yrs BP, and a younger, warmer phase, between ca. 12,000 and 11,500 cal yrs BP. The geomorphological features of the study sites and local environmental forces are also taken into consideration. The cladoceran-inferred summer temperature estimates from all of the study sites correspond closely with the available climate reconstruction for the YD in central Europe.

Palaeoenvironmental conditions and human activity in the vicinity of the Grodzisko fortified settlement (central Europe, Poland) from the late‐Neolithic to the Roman period

We present results from a palaeoecological analysis conducted on deposits accumulated in an oxbow lake of the Prosna River (Poland), next to the Grodzisko fortified settlement. Palaeobotanical and geochemical analyses—supported by radiocarbon dating—were performed to (i) reconstruct palaeoenvironmental conditions of the oxbow lake and its surrounding area; (ii) determine the beginning of the human activity in the fortified settlement vicinity; and (iii) assess the impact of human pressure on the environment. The Grodzisko fortified settlement was originally located on a river island, encircled by a wetland, improving its defensive value. Increases in the water level (1800–1300 BC and 700–200 BC) created a small lake/moat around the fortified settlement. Indicators for human activity from pollen records suggest the presence of human populations from the late Neolithic, ca. 2800 BC, with a clear intensification ca. 1700 BC. From ca. 1600 BC, a decrease in some decidous trees suggests forest clearance. Low levels of human activity indicator pollen ca. 2000 BC suggest a reduction of human pressure (possible depopulation). The regular presence of macrocharcoal pieces and an increase in human activity indicator pollen from ca. 1300 to 200 BC provide evidence for renewed human habitation around the sampling site.
