Sustainable sourcing of strategic raw materials by integrating recycled materials

In this paper we investigate a manufacturer's sustainable sourcing strategy that includes recycled materials. To produce a short life-cycle electronic good, strategic raw materials can be bought from virgin material suppliers in advance of the season and via emergency shipments, as well as from a recycler. Hence, we take into account virgin and recycled materials from different sources simultaneously. Recycling makes it possible to integrate raw materials out of steadily increasing waste streams back into production processes. Considering stochastic prices for recycled materials, stochastic supply quantities from the recycler and stochastic demand as well as their potential dependencies, we develop a single-period inventory model to derive the order quantities for virgin and recycled raw materials to determine the related costs and to evaluate the effectiveness of the sourcing strategy. We provide managerial insights into the benefits of such a green sourcing approach with recycling and compare this strategy to standard sourcing without recycling. We conduct a full factorial design and a detailed numerical sensitivity analysis on the key input parameters to evaluate the cost savings potential. Furthermore, we consider the effects of correlations between the stochastic parameters. Green sourcing is especially beneficial in terms of cost savings for high demand variability, high prices of virgin raw material and low expected recycling prices as well as for increasing standard deviation of the recycling price. Besides these advantages it also contributes to environmental sustainability as, compared to sourcing without recycling, it reduces the total quantity ordered and, hence, emissions are reduced.

Multi-supplier is one of the strategies to minimize holding cost and average stock-out cost as long as to stabilize the supply of raw materials. The common problems that the firms may face when applying the multi-supplier strategy are determining the right schedule and quantity ordered for each supplier. Complexity of the problem increases with the facts that each supplier may have different parameters, demand is uncertain, and the firms' constraints. Thus, this research is done to answer two main objectives: (1) to determine the optimum safety time (minimum raw material inventory) to prevent the stockout due to the demand uncertainty and (2) to determine the right schedule and quantity ordered for each supplier considering the different suppliers parameters: price, lead time, and supply capacity. The problem is modeled in Mixed Integer Linear Programming with total minimum inventory cost as the objective. PendahuluanSalah satu tantangan dalam supply chain management adalah kemampuan mengontrol jumlah modal yang dimiliki, yang antara lain tersimpan dalam bentuk investasi inventory, baik bahan baku, work in process, maupun produk jadi (Arda dan Hennet [1]). Pengendalian inventory menjadi aktivitas yang sangat penting pada sebuah perusahaan karena biaya inventory dapat mencapai sekitar 20% hingga 40% total nilai tahunan (Ganeshan [2]). Salah satu faktor penting dalam pengendalian inventory adalah penentuan safety stock yang tepat. Safety stock adalah sejumlah inventory, khususnya bahan baku, yang dimiliki perusahaan untuk mencegah terjadinya stock out selama waktu pemesanan akibat adanya fluktuasi permintaan dan lead time pemesanan ke supplier. Penentuan tingkat safety stock yang dipengaruhi oleh lead time pemesanan menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan supplier dalam memenuhi pesanan menjadi faktor penting dalam melakukan pengendalian inventory. In this paper, we quantify risks in a supply chain process from an aviation's perspective. Due to globalization, supply chains are getting more and more risky than before. As risk is inherent and uncertain activity, if it occurs then all of the supply chain partners will be impacted with a significant loss. To deal with this problem, a comprehensive risk evaluation index system has been proposed, which captures the level of risk faced by a supply chain in a given situation. For measuring risks in a supply chain we formulated a fuzzy multi-criteria group decision making model based on extended VIKOR method to determine the best feasible solution according to the selected risk parameters. A practical case study is conducted to test the applicability of the proposed methodology. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed framework and rank the risk alternatives in descending order.
