A Multiple-Action Self-Healing Coating

Abstract: This article describes a self-healing coating for corrosion protection of metals, which combines two different types of self-healing mechanisms in one coating with multiple-healing functionality. 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was loaded into layered double hydroxide (LDH) carriers that were mixed into an acrylated polycaprolactone polyurethane-based shape-recovery coating and applied on hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG). The effect of triggered release of MBT on the protection of HDG became visible when samples w… Show more

“…Most of the data found in the literature indicate that the OIH sol-gel materials show an enormous potential in the field of coatings for corrosion mitigation. Several multifunctional OIH coatings have been reported in the last few years showing promising results, with functions adapted according to each metallic substrate and environment [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77].…”

“…Recently, so-called multiple-action self-healing coatings have been developed, exhibiting multiple mechanisms that provide enhanced and prolonged corrosion protection of the coated materials. A self-healing mechanism of the coating is combined with a corrosion inhibitor that is distributed 2 of 16 or encapsulated in the coating matrix and subsequently released upon damage [15,16]. In addition, multi-layer coatings are proposed where different layers provide different functions [17].…”

“…The case d = 0 represents the undamaged state, whereas d = 1 represents the fully damaged state (see Figure 2a). The damage variable is used to relate the nominal stress tensor of the damaged material, σ, with the effective stress tensor of the undamaged material,σ, through the relation: Equation (14) also establishes the reduction of the elastic modulus in the presence of damage. If healing is taken into account, then damage is reversible and can be partly recovered by the considered healing mechanisms.…”

“…Most of these approaches require the supply of an external trigger (such as an increase of temperature or photostimulation) to activate the healing response, but the self healing mechanism is repeatable. Shape memory polymers can also be used to force the sealing of an open crack [13,14], provided the adequate thermal stimulus. The production of continuous phases has been promoted by means of the polymerization of encapsulated liquid agents [15][16][17] in polymeric coatings and the precipitation of solid compounds [18,19] in thermal barrier coatings.…”
