A multilevel exploration of Avena strigosa diversity as a prelude to promote alternative crop

Abstract: Background Sand oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb.), one of the four cultivated species of the genus Avena, could be considered as another alternative crop. In gene banks 865 germplasm samples of this species have been preserved that have not been thoroughly investigated so far. The results of phenotyping (36 traits), isoenzymatic (12 systems) and genetic (8 pairs of Sequence-related amplified polymorphism markers) variation were used to obtain the c… Show more

“…Analysis of population structure and genetic diversity based on accessions’ phenotypic traits is more convenient, but genotypic analysis is relatively accurate, and the two methods complement each other. Therefore, several authors point out that the best way is to combine the two methods to identify genetic differences [ 45 , 68 ], which can further our understanding of the genetic background of the population due to the abundant and non-overlapping information.…”

“…As a consequence, it is very difficult to detect the linkage between the genetic and geographical distance in crops (Boczkowska and Tarczyk 2013 ; Diederichsen 2008 ). However, in the case of minor crops not so intensively bred, the relationship with the region of origin is much more evident (Podyma et al 2017 ; Podyma et al 2019 ). Earlier analyses of rye also indicated a lack of a link between the genotype and place of origin.…”

“…Among them, there is the GOWER (1971) method, that allows to analyze the genetic divergence matching quantitative and qualitative traits. This statistical method has been successfully used in several crops, such as soybean (FOLLMANN et al, 2019;SILVA et al, 2022), coffee (FERRÃO et al, 2021), elephant grass (VIDAL et al, 2021), wheat (VIKRAM et al, 2019MEIER et al, 2021) and oat (FOGARTY et al, 2019;PODYMA et al, 2019).…”
