A multifunctional silicon-containing hyperbranched epoxy: controlled synthesis, toughening bismaleimide and fluorescent properties

Abstract: A novel silicon-containing hyperbranched epoxy (SHBEp) has been explored via a one-pot A 2 + B 3 polycondensation reaction using (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (A-187) and excess neopentyl glycol (NPG) under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions. We investigate for the first time bismaleimide (BMI) toughening effect using the fabricated polymer, and a series of SHBEp/BMI thermosets are then constructed, and then their mechanical properties like impact strength, flexural strength, and thermal stabili… Show more

“…As can be easily seen, a more complicated signal was observed in the spectrum of HAHBPs. Three separate signals were located at −44.62, −45.38, and −44.85 ppm, respectively attributed to the D, L, and T units . Thus, it is likely to determine DB based on a comparison of the areas from the respective peaks in the HAHBPs by Equation :DB = normalDnormal normal normal+normal normal normalT/normalDnormal normal normal+normal normal normalTnormal normal normal+normal normal normalL…”

“…The strategy was originally described by Niu et al. for fluorescent properties or removal of formaldehyde . It may be practically useful to increase the toughness of epoxy resin because of their unique structural features.…”

“…Compared with the conventional AIEgens, AIEgens carrying no phenyl rings have more advantages in the field of biological sensing and imaging due to their low toxicity and outstanding biocompatibility . Many non‐conjugated polymers with aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) characteristics have been reported, such as poly(amidoamine), poly(amino ester), poly(ethylenimine), polysiloxanes, polyurea, polycarbonate, and Polyacrylonitrile . These polymers generally emit blue fluorescence under particular excitation owing to the presence of non‐conventional chromophores such as aliphatic tertiary amine, carbonyl, ester and amide.…”

“…Poly‐[(maleic anhydride)‐alt‐(vinyl acetate)] (PMV) is able to emit bright fluorescence and the cause of its emission is attributed to clustering of the locked carbonyl groups . Niu and coworkers has synthesized a series of novel polysiloxanes under catalyst‐free condition, these polysiloxanes containing unconventional chromogens can give out bright blue fluorescence. It has also been mentioned that the oligooxazolines synthesized by a cationic ring‐opening polymerization can display bright blue emission.…”
