“…The upper panel of Figure displays representative micrographs of cells treated for 24 hours with 50 ppm Au GNRs@CPP. As already reported elsewhere , the accumulation of GNRs did not modify the cellular morphology but for the occasional extrusion of pseudopodia and the occurrence of a dark particulate inside the perinuclear cytoplasm, probably consisting of endosomal vesicles enclosing a high density of gold. The lower panel of Figure displays the viability of cells treated with GNRs@CPP at different concentrations and incubation times.…”

“…As we explained above, Si and its compounds are among the best inorganic materials from the point of view of non‐disturbing character of interaction with biological systems. As an example, some previous studies used designed SERS probes based on silica (SiO 2 )‐coated plasmonic structures, including gold nanorods and nanostars , to improve the biocompatibility and efficiency of SERS probes. The inclusion of nonoxidized crystalline silicon (Si) fraction into composition of SERS probes is expected to further improve the biocompatibility of these probes, as Si is one of the essential materials in biological systems, which does not provoke any toxic effects even under massive injection in vitro or in vivo .…”

“…Instead, m-PEG-SH [alpha-methoxy-omega-mercapto-poly(ethyleneglycol)] and c-PEG-SH (alpha-carboxy-omega-mercaptopoly(ethylene glycol)), M w ≈ 5000 gmol −1 were acquired from Iris Biotech GmbH (Marktredwitz, Germany). CPPs were provided by Giotto Biotech Srl (Florence, Italy) [ 56 ]. All components for cell cultivation were obtained from Euroclone SpA (Pero, Italy).…”

“…These particles were imaged with a CM12 transmission electron microscope (TEM) from Philips (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), with a voltage of 100 kV and operating in standard conditions. MUTAB- and CPP-coated gold nanorods were prepared according to the prescriptions of refs [ 29 ] and [ 56 ], respectively. Instead, pLys-coated gold nanorods were realized by the same protocol that was implemented for the preparation of their CPP-coated counterpart, with the replacement of CPPs with the same dose of pLys.…”
