A multidisciplinary approach remains the best strategy to improve and strengthen the management of ovarian cancer (Review)

Abstract: Ovarian cancer represents one of the most aggressive female tumors worldwide. Over the decades, the therapeutic options for the treatment of ovarian cancer have been improved significantly through the advancement of surgical techniques as well as the availability of novel effective drugs able to extend the life expectancy of patients. However, due to its clinical, biological and molecular complexity, ovarian cancer is still considered one of the most difficult tumors to manage. In this context, several studies… Show more

“…Combination of genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics will provide us with a more complete picture of the disease progress and the treatment options most likely to succeed. Experts from multiple disciplines of medicine and research working together to treat patients will facilitate progress and enhance patient outcomes [17,73,77,78].…”

“…PARPi have become the quintessential compound illustrating the utility of germline and somatic tumor testing. These agents are utilized both as maintenance treatment, sometimes in combination with bevacizumab, and as monotherapy in heavily pretreated recurrent disease [17,18]. PARPi have also been widely studied in clinical trials in combination with VEGF inhibitors, immunotherapy, and other targeted agents, in particular cediranib, a VEGF receptor and PDGF tyrosine kinase inhibitor [19].…”

“…The multi-exponential fit was achieved by the inverse Laplace transformation program CONTIN, resulting in the distribution of the relaxation times of species in solution. The distributions over τ were converted into R h distributions by means of Equation (2).…”

“…Ovarian cancer (OC) is a highly aggressive type of tumor. It is the third in terms of incidence of tumors of the female reproductive system and the first in terms of death rates of gynecological malignancies in women, leading to almost 185,000 deaths annually worldwide [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Approximately 90% of malignant ovarian tumors are epithelial in origin [ 3 , 4 ], and among them, the serous histological subtype is the most diagnosed and responsible for the most OC deaths [ 1 , 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Therefore, cancer care cannot neglect psychosocial care [7,8], which is defined as any activity aimed at improving or reducing the impact of cancer on mental health and improving patients' abilities to cope with the demands of treatment and uncertainty of disease outcome across the entire spectrum from pre-diagnosis to palliative care and survival [9]. In this regard, a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to cancer provided by a team of healthcare professionals from different fields could improve patients' quality of life [10,11]. In particular, several studies have shown the positive health impact of a wide range of psychosocial interventions [12][13][14][15], but many patients who could benefit from such interventions still do not receive them [7,9,16] due to financial and organizational barriers.…”
