A multidisciplinary approach of success in team-handball

Abstract: The aims of this study were: (i) to describe and compare morphologic, physiological, specific-skills and psychological attributes of team-handball players from two teams with different performances, and (ii) to identify the variables that differentiated between the successful and less-successful team-handball players. Thirty-four (age 23.4 ± 4.7 years; stature, 182 ± 6.3 cm; body mass 85.4 ± 11.4 kg) professional male adult team-handball players were studied. Eighteen athletes (age 23.0 ± 3.8 years) were class… Show more

“…The larger chest girth appeared to either gradually shift them to a position on the skin where they had trouble detecting the HR or created a gap between ECG sensor and the skin, even with self-hooking elastic strap pushing then down. Since professional handball players tend to have large chest girth measurements (Mesosternale; Massuça and Fragoso, 2013 ; Massuça et al, 2014 ), the anthropometric attributes of this athletic population might offer another explanation of the invalid measurements of HR using Hexoskin. Smith et al (2019) highlighted that the failure to properly record HR throughout the cycling exercise may be related to improperly fitting shirts causing the sensors to detach from the skin.…”

“…Higher competitive anxiety among athletes engaged in individual sport explains the negative impact of competitive anxiety on the powerlifting athletes' performance (Judge et al, 2016). Similarly, adolescent swimmers' performance is related to their competitive anxiety score (Verdaguer, Abad, & Mas, 2016) However, there is no difference in anxiety between more and less successful Portuguesemale national handball players (Massuça, &Fragoso, 2013). In contrast, competitive anxiety trait negatively correlated with female soccer teamsperformance (Singh et al, 2017).…”

“…Body mass, stature, sitting height, and three skinfolds—triceps (Caterisano et al, 1997 ), calf (GML), and subscapular (SBS), were measured according to the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry guidelines (Marfell-Jones et al, 2006 ). Arm span and hand span were also measured (Massuça and Fragoso, 2013 ). Body mass was measured with a Secca body scale (model 761 7019009) to the nearest 0.5 kg, and stature and sitting height were measured with a Siber-Hegner anthropometric kit to the nearest of 0.1 cm.…”
