A multicentre cross-sectional study of arm lymphedema four or more years after breast cancer treatment in Iranian patients

Abstract: The rate of lymphedema in our patients was 17.5%, ranging from 4 to 21% in different study centres. Time post surgery, treatment with radiotherapy and the technique used, and nodal radiation seem to be factors that are related to this large variation.

“…6,9,16 However, other authors reported no association between lymphedema and the axillary surgical approach. 3,10,11,15 On the other hand, in this study the number of dissected nodes did not show any significant association with lymphedema. To date there is still a controversy over whether the number of lymph nodes removed is or not an independent predictor for lymphedema, while some authors reported significant association, 3,6,11,17,19,20 others did not find any effect.…”

“…6,10,[13][14][15]19,20,29,30 In this case, although we measured perimeters, our estimates were closer to the studies performed by self-reported information. This difference may have been due to the diagnostic criteria we applied that included lymphedema in hand, wrist, and chest wall.…”

“…All studies were conducted between 2001 and 2019 and three studies [22][23][24] were reported in non-English language publications (Refer to Table 2). While the majority of studies were conducted in Brazil (n = 12) and Turkey (n = 9), most other regions with LMIC were represented, including: South America (n = 12) [5,20,24,[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]49] [47,48,54] and East Asia and Pacific (n = 1) [46].…”
